Comments: Sometimes events define an artist, sometimes an artist defines an event. In Eric Clapton's case, both happened at once. In one of the single, pivotal moments in his career, Live Aid marked the return of "Slowhand" to the public spotlight, and reestablished his prominence as one of the world's finest guitar players and performers, all in a three song set. Backed by one of his finest touring bands, and joined by Phil Collins, Clapton took the stage in front of a sellout crowd at Philadeplhia's JFK Stadium in blistering summer heat, and in front of millions across the globe on then-novel satellite TV. Collins and Jamie Oldaker threw down a beautifully syncopated backdrop, built upon by legendary bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, gifted pianist Chris Stainton, guitarist Tim Renwick, and singers Marcy Levy and Shaun Murphy. This was broadcast nationally in the US by the MTV network, this of course being back when MTV, the "music television" network, actually provided music programming instead of pathetic reality programming and game shows. Sometimes performers are not aware of the brilliance of a performance as it's being played out on stage, but this was one of those nights where every member of the band knew they were "in the zone". VHS copy of S-VHS master. The look on Clapton's face at the end of "Layla" (below) speaks volumes - these folks KNEW they had hit the ball out of the park:
