Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, but I simply do not agree with Tony's. Eric Clapton has been my favourite performer for the past 26 years BECAUSE of what he has done in that period. Sure Cream and Beano were great (although I was only in my early teens when they were current), but it was Ocean Boulevard which slowly but surely won me over. Why? Warmth and integrity. They are terms I would use to sum up his laid-back output during the much of 70's (his most maligned period). He had undoubtedly lost some of that young man's fire, but there was, and still is, passion in his playing which makes me enjoy his music more than that of any other artist. Mediocre is a word I simply do not associate with Clapton at all. I could go on about this topic indefinitely, but time and lack of typing skill forbid. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this issue. Considering the fact that Clapton has released very little worth listening to in the past 30 years or so, Maconie's comments, while a bit harsh, aren't necessarily too far off base. Granted one riff doesn't make a career, and his best work was probably recorded prior to that one riff, but 7 great years out of 38 (with the remaining 31 being mediocre at best) isn't something to jump up and down about. He went through a "laid back" phase, when there were other artists who did the laid back bit SO much better. He then seemed to go through a "disco" period, although disco died years earlier. I've always felt that disco is machine-manufactured music. I prefer Eric Clapton instead of Eric Clapton imitating someone ... or some machine. But when one considers the substances that Clapton abused, the mystery becomes abundantly clear. However, other people do like those periods--the stoned and drunk Clapton--and EC sold many records. And it wasn't just one riff either. Beginning around 1988 or 1989, I think Clapton began to turn a page in his life and was slapped in the face by the death of his son in 1991. I'd call this a transitional period in his career, as were the years 1969-1973. Whatever you think, his music has been qualitatively different since that time, including his guitar playing. So, the transitional period pretty much ended with "24 Nights," and a new one began with "Unplugged." And this new period saw EC return--in great form--to the blues, with his 1993-1995 blues tours and "From The Cradle." "Pilgrim" seemed to document the dark time Clapton went through with his son's death and the time immediately following. However, "Reptile" continues EC's musical journey to a more "smiling" place. In any case, it's not laid back, and it's not disco. So, I wouldn't agree that Clapton's 38-year career has had only 7 "good" years. Although the Bluesbreakers-Cream-Blind Faith stretch is, by far, my favorite, I'd say that he's turned out some pretty good music, for the most part, since about 1988 or 1989. That adds up, in my view, at least 20 "good" years. And I cannot discount the fact that Clapton ALWAYS played great blues--the foundation of his music--even during the sub-par '70s and '80s. Want a good example? Just listen to "Double Trouble" on "No Reason To Cry" (1976). It's a stupendous performance--Bluesbreakers quality--on an otherwise mediocre album. And there have been other great blues performances along the way, which tend to illustrate that Clapton's always had that talent, although he didn't always choose to display it. I've been in Porto Alegre too, the concert there was a kind of warm-up for São Paulo and Rio. Only diference were the slow blues, there we had Five Long Years (with the HYELAW intro, it realy fooled me!). Good show, but not as good as Rio, anyway, my friend Marissom asked me to mention that he could feel chills up and down his spine, and had a kind of farewell feeling. Some interesting stuff about Rio do complement Andre's post: -AFTER the stage began to be built, 1 week before the concert, they had to put it down and begin all the work again, on the opposite side of the venue (Apoteose Square, also known as "Sambodrome"), since from the other side he could see the Corcovado Hill with the Christ Statue on top, the main touristic spot in our city. I believe he got inspired by that! What a concert! (my 3rd EC concert, probably the best). -Roberto Frejat, the opening act did a good job filling Doyle's shoes. The only problem is that at one point, he sang a song prasing marijuana, totally outburst at an Eric's concert. He played some blues and rock ballads, fits nicely. -I was a bit behind Andre's best spot on the venue-it's true, he was really climbing up the fence in front of stage, I was green of envy about that-hehe I was at 9th row, right in front of Eric's mic. I took some pics, but the result wasn't good, since I used a very cheap camera, no zoom, bad flash etc. There are lots of better pics of the tour in the Geetarz site. Mine I wouldn't recommend, they worth just as a memory for me, not good as documental photos. Anyway, I'll see if I scan some of it in case someone ask that. I just can't promise, since I don't have a scan and I depond on others. -On Reptile, the opening number here, Greg made a pout-pourri of brazilian songs, and some people recognized them instantly, other not; that's why Andre mentioned the episode but coulnd't figure out why all the laughs. The fact is that in Porto Alegre, Eric barely talked to anyone, even the band, and in Rio, at least he seemed to intereact a lot with the band. The fact is that Eric didn't want to give any autographs (refused to give one to a friend of mine who met him), he was in a very closed and private mood. -By the encore, Greg and Nathan returned onstage using the Brazilian national soccer team shirts, one in yellow, the other with the 2nd shirt, the blue one, very cool, since our team is not doing that well in the qualifyings for the world cup (british & german buddies will get this better than americans) -During the introduction of the band, at the time to say 'on bass, Nathan East', he said something else instead of his name, and I couldn't understand what, but I really think I heard other name, like Dave Broonze or something. The fact is that Eric had a big laugh, and Nathan pointed his index finger back to him laughing harder. Maybe Andre got what he said and can clear this. I thought funny the idea of Eric mispronoucing or forgeting the name of the musician who's played for more time with him ever-hehe -Layla & Tears In Heaven (believe me or not!) were the highlights. Both were simply perfect, crowd went crazy on this tunes more than in the others. -Drunk asshole was in Rio, but the couples fighting (the same ones from Detroit-hehe) attended in Porto Alegre -one chick even grabbed the other girl's hair during the concert, really, really instructive and entertaing pre-show attraction. BTW, in Rio, a middle-aged lady fainted twice, I recall the first time was right in the middle of River of Tears solo, second time, during HYELAW solo, so you can figure out that these were the best solos of the night, and that Eric should not use his super-powers in order to torture women (just groupies) anymore!!! ahha -I heard some rumors that one of our satelite tv channels will be broadcasting the concert in pay-per-view, I'm praying for that every night, a new great boot could come up after that. Bottom line: GREAT GREAT GREAT CONCERTS!!! Eric is still the best in the business!
