I'd call this a transitional period in his career, as were the years 1969-1973. Whatever you think, his music has been qualitatively different since that time, including his guitar playing. << I'm in agreement with those who find EC's '70s work to be mediocre on the whole. But even amidst that, he had some incredible shining moments, and even the most torporous concert tapes (of those I've heard) have transcending passages. I think his transition began a little sooner than DeltaNick does. I heard inklings on Money & Cigarettes, where he seemed to be digging in deeper than he had been. But the big turnaround in my eyes was the COMMAND he showed onstate at Live Aid. He almost threw up on the way to the stage; he got zapped by the mike as he started White Room, yet he still absolutely floored all those pre-GenExers out there who had heard his hallowed name but had only heard him do Lay Down Sally. That's when I think he started the long slow road back. What I saw at Kemper Arena this summer was a mature, vigorous artist who has his ups and downs but has his hands and heart in the right place.
