WOLF --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: Richard Batty Subject: RE: Clapton is an OK guitar player Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Brian, The Hyde Park 1996 show is one of my favorites. I burned a CD from the video and listen to it as much as any other CD over the past year. I love the acoustic Layla, Badge is great as always, Five Long Years is very passionate playing, Old Love is extremely evocative in terms of emotion. There are some incredibly emotional bends in several songs - Five Long Years, White Room, Sheriff, HYELAW. For me, few guitarists are able to convey so much emotion in their playing. Rick -----Original Message----- From: Brian Doble [mailto:Brian_Doble@umit.maine.edu] Sent: None Subject: Clapton is an OK guitar player In my opinion, Clapton's playing on "Live in Hyde Park" is as good as ever before. He was having a lot of fun, bending those strings and playing quick licks, etc. What the recent discussion reminds me of is when Clapton said that he'd been there 30 years before, and that it felt "just the same." What do you all think of this? --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: "Josh Ritter" Subject: MP3 of the Week Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Holiday Greetings Digest fans, This week's MP3 comes courtesy of the officially released album, "A Very Special Christmas Live." EC's performance of Christmas Tears is by far my favorite Christmas song. Eric is very prominent on the rest of the album as well, performing with John Popper from Blues Traveler (Christmas Blues), Tracy Chapman (Give Me One Reason), and Sheryl Crow (Merry Christmas Baby). I believe this concert was televised. If anyone has a copy for trade, please contact me privately. Enjoy! - Josh Ritter www.msu.edu/~ritterj3 --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: Keith Bode Subject: Nothin' But the Blues Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I had recorded this twice off the air, during PBS pledge breaks, and have worn out those copies. A friend in Canada sent me a duplicate made from her duplicate, which was appreciated, but unfortunately not anywhere as good as the worn out pair of VHS I already had, but it did answer a question for me. Some where out in this world, Scocese's second great concert film, "Nothin' But the Blues" was available in comercial release. Does anyone know where the hell to get this, and can in be gotten comercially in DVD as well as VHS? Keith --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: hilker.g@pg.com Subject: Re: The Slow Digest Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Is Clapton lazy as a guitarist? I think so and he's said so himself in the past in interviews. Can he still play like he could in the 60's? You bet! It's just that he doesn't do it as often as he did back then. If you pay close attention, these blurbs of genius come through - they were in your face in the 60's. A couple cases in point. Listen to the "Legends" with David Sanborn, Marcus Miller, etc.. Half of what they did was Jazz - not at all where Clapton comes from - but he plays beautifully with those guys! Then there's the benefit for 9-11 with McCartney on "Let It Be" where Paul says "C'mon Eric, play a solo for me!" and Clapton proceeds to pop-off a most complicated chord progression as a solo. Genius! I guess the point is, is that he can when he wants to, it's just that he doesn't want to so often anymore... Just my 0.02 Euro... Greg --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: Ben Talman Subject: EC at the Budokan Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have just returned from Tokyo after seeing EC at the Budokan last Friday night, the 30th of November. what a show, starting with acoustic numbers and then onto electric, playing songs like Wonderful Tonight, Layla, Tears in Heaven, Sunshine of your Love,Riding with the King, Have you ever loved a Women, Cocaine, amongst others finally finishing with Somewhere over the Rainbow. It was a strange feeling being in Tokyo at the Budokan, seeing Eric in concert, having only days before being in Saitama Shintoshin at the John Lennon Museum, and at the same time as George Harrison's passing, with one of my favourite albums being Just One Night, at the Budokan in 1979, a dream finally coming true, since he was not coming to Australia. I had seen him three times previously in Australia. It is something that I will not forget in a hurry, that is for sure!! I had seats with friends right at the back of the first floor, with the stage slightly to our right. I may have some pictures of this as well, will have to wait for processing, but I was able to get some shots off with a 300mm zoom lens, with 1600 ASA film, exposures about 1/90s to 1/125s. We had been told that no cameras or tape units were allowed, they looked into our bags, but could not/did not see my camera case with Nikon on the nose of it. It will be interesting to see the results of this. A great number of souvenirs were on sale, pictures, posters, badges, CDs, and lots of ticket scalpers. Certainly an enjoyable concert. I purchased two of the concert programs that come in a black cardboard wallet with "ERIC CLAPTON, JAPAN TOUR 2001, stamped on it, the text in Japanese, but with fantastic photographs, the same as the US tour program, but unique all the same. One returning from Japan, I received via Fedex delivery from the US from Fanasylum.com, three tee shirts from the world tour, for my wife, as a thank you for letting me go to Japan, she likes him too, but it is difficult when there are two very young children involved in the equation and concerns with air travel since NYC on the 11th of September. Before parting, my thanks to Shinichiro for making these tickets available to me long distance, from Sydney, Australia Ben --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: POLLET Eddy Subject: Dick Heckstall-Smith Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Hi all, I just was looking up some info about Dick Heckstall-Smith on www.allmusic.com, and saw it was written -on whatever it is that they write it upon there (artist ? song ?)- that he worked with Eric Clapton . Is there someone who happens to know on which record or in which group this might have been ? To be honest, I think this is a mistake, but I'm not sure of it . TIA, Eddy --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: Jonathan Clermont Subject: "Underwhelmed?!?!?!" Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii To those of you who took offense to my comment about Delta Nick being "underwhelmed" by post Cream EC (this does not include Nick), I apologize. I guess it was insensitive?... Who knows? Nick, we should start a separate list-serve dedicated to you. I've had about a half dozen e-mails putting me in my place since my reply. I meant no disrespect, or nothin' (insert Goodfellas accent here). Anyway, on to brass tacks... Do any of you know for sure whether EC has been going without a pick these days? I have my suspicions. Some of the Reptile concerts, particularly the slow blues, sound finger picked. This is a new thing, no? He never used to electric sans pick, did he? Keep in mind that during recording, the first few takes have a spontaneous feel that can't sometimes be repeated. Especially in those days keeping "Pop" recordings to 3:05 (albeit not in Creams perameters) engineers sometimes would (and to this day) record long solos and cull out all but a "short sweet" section and even piece together a bit unrecognized by the player who authored it. Musicians may make a recording, hate or love it and move on never revisiting it again except to hear it on a radio in the supermarket. Any sponteneity would surely be lost replicating note for note umpteen million stops on the next world tour! Peace, Monte --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: "Joseph A. Vargas" Subject: Clapton / Harrison Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Have there been any comments from Clapton referring to George Harrison's passing ? I understand that he is back to playing Badge and dedicating it to George. As one Slowhander suggested.........wouldn't it be a wonderful surprise to hear Clapton do Here Comes the Sun.....especially a nice acoustic version......or Eric singing While My Guitar Gently Weeps or Something.........Badge is one of my all-time favs, but how bout breaking the pattern a bit......... Has anyone ever heard whether the musical portion of Eric's wedding with Patti was filmed ? With Eric, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo all getting up to play.........what songs were performed? Anybody know ? Any talk of Harrison's Japanese tour backed by Clapton's band finally being released ?.............this was filmed and scheduled for release at the same time as the double CD, but the VHS and Laser releases were scrapped last minute......why? If they ever do release it, I hope they think to include the Clapton portion as bonus material. I hope some great Harrison treasues surface..........there must be some fantastic chestnuts that could be released...... Cheers, Jay End of slowhand Digest V01 Issue #296
