Willie Dixon was the foundation and the cement that made Chess Records,
not the 2 owners. Everyone at Chess was part Willie Dixon. In the
earlier years, he played bass and produced every record. As time
passed, some others began to write songs, and take on a heavier role,
but every artist was brought in by Willie. Muddy, Howlin', Junior,
Willie produced all their early work and wrote a bunch of it. So, with
all the blues he's played of chess artists, I'd say, he played a Willie
tribute or 2.

I've never heard of Smile being recorded as a studio cut. t's not mentioned
in Roberty's Sessions book either. Does any one have this?

Biggest problem with that is the various copyright/royalty hassles with so
many artists on those sessions although I'd love to see it.

While Duck still hasn't got on the bandwagon, I don't see much left over for
Polygram to issue in the way of live stuff. 74-82 only. 80-82 was pretty
weak in terms of performances and EC was pretty ill.
74-79? Maybe there are some standout tracks still in the vault but I've
listened to just about everything on the boot scene and I don't think
there's any hidden gems.

 From Billboard.com...
The new album by Jools Holland, "Big Band Rhythm & Blues," featuring EC on
Ray Charles' "What Would I Do Without You" and the last song written by
George Harrison, will be released in North America on January 8. The
22-track big band disc from Rhino Records was released in late November in
England and debuted at No. 11 on the British albums chart.

According to Jools Holland's website, the album was not scheduled to be
released in the U.S. until March, but I suspect that demand following
Harrison's death may have accelerated the timing. Right now, it is
available as an import...and you can pre-order the N.A. version
on-line. George's song, "Horse to the Water," was co-written with his son
Dhani and published under "RIP Ltd. 2001," a clear reference to his
then-failing health.
