EC uses open G on acoustic guitars, Dobros preferred (unplugged). He also played different open tunings on FTC or Layla. He often usus the tunings of the originals, like open E for How Long Blues, sometimes tuned down to C# (How Long Blues) or other weird tunings, sometimes even with standard tuning like the late Muddy did (Standing around crying from FTC). Seems like he can play nearly every tuning. Although he doesn't reach Duane on slide. Some *very* basic info is on my site at http://www.12bar.de Keep on, Gerd --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: Bryce Utting Subject: Re: Open Tunings Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed "Jack and Bonnie" wrote: >After reading a great article in Guitar Player magazine on open G tuning >I wondered if anyone knows if Eric uses any open tunings and if so which >and on what songs. Off the top of my head: Give Me Strength: Open G (got the intro tabbed if anyone wants it) Running on Faith: Open G (rhythm's in standard, though) *anything* of Elmore James': Open D (though the 70s Sky is Crying might be in open E, and the two on FTC are in open Db) Walking Blues: Open D (or maybe E. The "Hold on, hold on" at the start of Alberta is because he's forgotten to take the slide off before starting the next song. Oops.) Most of his Dobro parts are in open G, and much of the Robert Johnson he's done over the years has been in D or E, but sometimes G. There's a Muddy track on FTC in open as well but I've just gone and forgotten which... duh! Unlike JLH I don't think I've ever heard him play open without a slide. Is this a recent article? Their special on Ry Cooder and a bunch of others (his Blue Suede Shoes from Get Rhythm is a blast, and the Paris, Texas theme is *great* to practice with: hits the blue 3rd from both the major and minor sides) several years ago was quite good, and if they've done it again I might keep my eyes open. cheersya, butting --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: "David J. Hedges" Subject: Non-EC Content Content-type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Actually, a review that I read mentioned EC, but... Have you heard the new Paul Pena CD called 'New Train'? It was recorded in 1973, but not released until 2000. As far as I can tell it is one of only three albums total by him. Mr. Pena recently held the limelight for the documentary 'Genghis Blues' which was about his experience with Tuvan throat singing. I digress - the 'new' album is fantastic. The guitar work is solid and the singing is unreal. Some songs I feel like I am listening to Hendrix and others I feel like I am listening to Van Morrison. Guests include Jerry Garcia, Merle Saunders and the Persuasions. Pena wrote 'Jet Airliner' and sings it here. I think that I read that it was Steve Miller's producer that brought the old recordings to life again. Pena has a web site at www.paulpena.com. This is an incredible CD and I would like to hear what others have to say about it. It was indeed recorded during the "Backless" sessions, and it sure sounds like the writer of "Roll It" (was it Marcy?) put new words to this arrangement. --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: "DeltaNick" Subject: Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm & Blues - Rhino Featured Product Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Jools Holland's "Small World Big Band" has just been released in the US on Rhino. The album's title has changed. "Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm & Blues" is the US title, but the packaging is virtually the same and the tracks are identical. There's one by EC, another by Steve Winwood, and George Harrison's last recording is here too. http://www.rhino.com/features/78264p.html DeltaNick --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: "Brian Sleeman" Subject: ISO: Doyle Bramhall II Opening Shows for Clapton Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Hi all- This is somewhat non-Eric content, but I would appreciate it if those of you who have any of Doyle's opening gigs for Clapton would contact me if you're interested in possible trades. I have a host of his shows from this past year, but there've got to be more of them out there. In particular I'm looking for the shows at Madison Square Garden, and any of the club gigs he did along the way as well. Thanks much... -Brian _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: Lefffe@aol.com Subject: 24 nights collector Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit the original book can be found at this site: http://www.genesis-publications.com/books/nights/index.html --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: "Jeff and Mary Berk" Subject: Fw: Fw: wedding reflections Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit First of all, the first paragraph was not my comment. In the second, I was stating the comments of my daughters....maybe I should have started the paragraph out that way. Stating what my daughters opinions of this are, is not passing judgement. I would be the last to do this since my husband is older than I am.
