I remember two songs from Unplugged: "walking blues" and "running on faith",
but I'm sure he has used this open tuning in a lot more songs.

Juanma

After reading a great article in Guitar Player magazine on open G tuning =
I wondered if anyone knows if=20
Eric uses any open tunings and if so which and on what songs.

Kudos also to this years Slowhanders CD tribute!!! Wished everyone =
lived closer so we could get together and
have some jams sessions.

I said, and I should have known better:
>Give Me Strength: Open G (got the intro tabbed if anyone wants it)

o' course, that's in standard. The high C# in E is the giveaway. me ==
doofus.

Also, I wish I'd looked at Gerd's http://www.12bar.de site a long time ago,
it's wonderful. Learning lots of stuff. Except:

 >The "blue note" is a diminished fifth.

Only if you're a pianist or John Duarte! The blue notes are microtones
between the major and minor third and the major and minor seventh (though
concepts like "third" and "seventh" can be highly fluid in some hands!),
hence the quarter-tone bends in various EC solos. 's why I mentioned
Cooder's Paris, Texas: in the four notes of the main motif he hits the
third from *both* slightly flat of midway between major and minor and then
from slightly sharp.

[ I'll have to listen again when I'm a bit more awake, but now I've sat
down to tab out Give Me Strength I'm pretty sure there's a blue third in
there as well. ]

The best explanation of blue notes I've come across is James Lincoln
Collier's The Making of Jazz, which gave me a resounding "ah-hahhhh!!!"
after all that time with various bottlenecks and Cooder... y' learn new
things all the time!

Mary,

looking back, my mail still came out rather on the negative side. I
meant to "tune" in a positive direction :) but haven't really succeeded.

hi philip:

didnt mean to come across so harsh with my views. the post was meant to be
sarcastic, not judgemental. i am just hoping that someone i admire isnt
getting duped by another. here's hoping my conjecture is totally off base,
and also wish that god blesses them and their union.

regards
sam

The Sunday Chicago Tribune had a feature in the Arts section on over rated
artists, with the headline " The press raves about them . The public loves
them. But to our critics, these artists are just pain overrated. Rock
critic Greg Kot, who has never had much good to say about Clapton, wrote
the following:

Granted, he's a great guitarist. Granted he's sold tons of records. But
what has Clapton done in the last 30 years to justify the hype? The
driving force in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, the Yardbirds, Cream, Blind
Faith and Derek and the Dominos, Clapton hit his creative peak in 1970 with
"Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" and has been coasting ever since.
His '90s comeback was built on middle-of-the-road melodrama such as "Tears
in Heaven" and a defanged remake of "Layla" that belies his legend. Once
an architect of blues-rock who quit the Yardbirds for making too many
concessions to pop, Clapton has embraced pop in a big way in the last three
decades. He regularly sells out arenas, but he's also been selling his
legacy short.

Although some of his statements ring true, I have a hard time accepting the
fact that Clapton has been coasting for 30 years.

I'd love a tab of LGMS in open-G.

FYI, Walkin' Blues is in open-G as well, not E or D. Alberta is not in open
tuning at all, but standard on a 12-string. Eric switched guitars between
the dobro and the D12-20 used for Alberta, but he forgot (momentarily) to
remove the slide:)

Off the top of my head:

Give Me Strength: Open G (got the intro tabbed if anyone wants it)
Running on Faith: Open G (rhythm's in standard, though)
*anything* of Elmore James': Open D (though the 70s Sky is Crying might be
in open E, and the two on FTC are in open Db)
Walking Blues: Open D (or maybe E. The "Hold on, hold on" at the start of
Alberta is because he's forgotten to take the slide off before starting the
next song. Oops.)

Most of his Dobro parts are in open G, and much of the Robert Johnson he's
done over the years has been in D or E, but sometimes G. There's a Muddy
track on FTC in open as well but I've just gone and forgotten which...
duh! Unlike JLH I don't think I've ever heard him play open without a
slide.

Is this a recent article? Their special on Ry Cooder and a bunch of others
(his Blue Suede Shoes from Get Rhythm is a blast, and the Paris, Texas
theme is *great* to practice with: hits the blue 3rd from both the major
and minor sides) several years ago was quite good, and if they've done it
again I might keep my eyes open.

Now that Eric is married and baby is born, what is he working on? Does
anyone have any inside information? i remember reading last year, he wanted
to record an album with the Impressions followed by another blues-rock
album. Can anyone confirm or deny this

Also, besides the Japanese reissues due on 1/15, what else EC related is
coming out in the near future?

BTW, anyone heard the Jools track EC contributed? Very nice stuff.. EC seems
to be a big fan of Ray Charles.
