Hi SD'ers,

Let me say I am glad the subject was brought up by
Mark. Marj speaks his mind when needed and normally
(like this time) hits the target in the center.

Another item to add to the fray. A number of burners
that are being included in new hardware now have a
mandatory 20-30Mb "gap" betwen tracks when ripping and
burning on these burners. I recently bought one of
these systems (emachine with the stock burner). When
the problem was established (by the manufacturer of
the burner), the burner was removed and then installed
in the kids computer. The reason I bring this up is
the number of discs I now have to "fix" because of
this 'new' type burner.

I have known some very good trades (you all know who
you are and this is not directed at you) that do
supply a good disc but recently the numbers of
'gappie' discs has risen. The way to tell is easy --
the gap is not secnds long but just long enough to
ruin the disk.

Please keep the Clapton pool clean and of the quality
it is now.

Thanks
Ed Petry

Second question first - 1954 thru 1977, the three way switch was standard.
>From 1977 - present, the five way is standard, although some reissue models
come stock with a three way (and a spare 5 in the goodie packet). And of
course there are special models with different switching, such as the Elite
Strats, 1980-1983 "the Strat", etc.

Blackie has been retrofitted with a five way switch, many if not most of the
old guitars have been modified with a five way - as the switches age it
becomes increasingly difficult to "balance" the switch in the 2 and 4
positions. Trying to quickly hit 2 or 4 with a 3-way is also mostly
impossible on the fly. Check out old photos before the 5s became available,
and people like Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, would tape the switch into
position. Another trick is to jam a matchbook in the slot. EC's been known
to do the tape for different reason - at times he will put white electrical
tape over the "slot" for the switch to prevent it from entering the bridge
only position. If you watch the new Budokan video from last December
there's a solo where he slaps the switch down meaning to go into the
"bridge+middle" position and goes too far, and quickly spanks it up a notch.
He doesn't use the bridge PU much!

Hope this helps!

Well, that's it for this offer! There should be another handfull of seeds
out there quite shortly, so if you didn't get a response, just hang on tight
and keep watching the SD.

Up until the early 80's ( I think) all strats had 3 ways including Blackie.
When players found out they could put the switch between the 1-2-3 settings
for an out of phase sound ( Dire Straits sound is between 3-5 ) then Fender
began manufacturing all Strats with 5-way switches.I am sure someone else
will correct me!

Apologies to posting this to the digest but my pleas to the people with
stones sites have not worked.

I have loads of EC shows to trade for the thing I'm looking for-

I'm looking for a copy of a CD (cd single I believe) released about 10 years
ago to raise money for a homeless shelter. This contained a live performance
of "Gimme Shelter" by the stones.
If anyone could burn me a copy of this CD which is no longer available, I'll
be happy to provide you with something from my list.

Thanks

 Scott

Hi all,

Mark wrote :

"Extract with EAC, and burn with a decent program".

Please note that the new versions of EAC DOES ALSO make burning, and indeed feature a nice "copy CD" button.

All you have to do is put the source on a reliable reader, put a blank on Recorder, press the "copy CD" button, go and get a beer, after a few minutes you have a perfect clone in your recorder !

If any problem happens while extracting, EAC will not record and advise you, it's excelent !

Cheers,

Andre

On the right nights of the Reptile tour you could hear a song from every side of the Layla album:

Bell Bottom Blues
Key To The Highway
Have You Ever Loved A Woman

Okay, yeah this isn't the usual SD gearhead stuff,
but, I've said sillier things. Some other sites have
had a little fun with the topic of EC getting married,
so I thought this story may strike a chord, so to
speak, one that may bring you to the verge of tears ~
at least!

BTW thanks Josh for your great mp3's, that's very nice
of you to do that for us!

Here's the practical fable:

   What Women Want!

Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the
monarch of a neighboring kingdom. The monarch could
have killed him, but was moved by Arthur's youth and
ideals. So the monarch offered him freedom, as long as
he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur
would have a year to figure out the answer; if, after
a year, he still had no answer, he would be put to
death.

The question: What do women really want?

Such a question would perplex even the most
knowledgeable man, and, to young Arthur, it seemed an
impossible query. But, since it was better than death,
he accepted the monarch's proposition to have an
answer by year's end.

He returned to his kingdom and began to poll
everybody: the princess, the prostitutes, the priests,
the wise men (?who dat?), the court jester. He spoke
with everyone, but no one could give him a
satisfactory answer. Many people advised him to
consult the old witch--only she would know the answer.
The price would be high; the witch was famous
throughout the kingdom for the exorbitant prices she
charged.

The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no
alternative but to talk to the witch. She agreed to
answer his question, but he'd have to accept her price
first: The old witch wanted to marry Gawain, the most
noble of the Knights of the Round Table and Arthur's
closest friend!

Young Arthur was horrified: She was hunchbacked and
hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like sewage, made
obscene noises... etc. He had never encountered such
a repugnant creature. He refused to force his friend
to marry her and have to endure such a burden.

Gawain, upon learning of the proposal, spoke with
Arthur. He told him that nothing was too big a
sacrifice compared to Arthur's life and the
preservation of the Round Table. Hence, their wedding
was proclaimed, and the witch answered Arthur's
question thus:

What a woman really wants is to be in charge of her
own life, mind and possessions.

Everyone instantly knew that the witch had uttered a
great truth and that Arthur's life would be spared.
And so it was. The neighboring monarch granted Arthur
total freedom.

What a wedding Gawain and the witch had! Arthur was
torn between relief and anguish. Gawain was proper as
always, gentle and courteous. The old witch put her
worst manners on display, and generally made everyone
very uncomfortable.

The honeymoon hour approached. Gawain, steeling
himself for a horrific experience, entered the
bedroom. But what a sight awaited him! The most
beautiful woman he'd ever seen lay before him! The
astounded Gawain asked what had happened. The beauty
replied that since he had been so kind to her when
she'd appeared as a witch, she would henceforth be her
horrible, deformed self half the time, and the other
half, she would be her beautiful maiden self.

Which would he want her to be during the day, and
which during the night?

What a cruel question! Gawain pondered his
predicament. During the day, a beautiful woman to show
off to his friends, but at night, in the privacy of
his home, an old witch? Or would he prefer having by
day a hideous witch, but by night a beautiful woman
with whom to enjoy many intimate moments?

What would you do? What Gawain chose follows below,
but don't read until you've made your own choice.

Noble Gawain replied that he would let her choose for
herself. Upon hearing this, she announced that she
would be beautiful all the time, because he had
respected her enough to let her be in charge of her
own life.

What is the moral of this story?

The moral is: If your woman doesn't get her own way,
things are going to get ugly!

Good Day SD Fans -

The MP3 of the Week this week (and only 1 day late!) is Badge/Let It Rain,
as requested by a fellow Digest member. The tracks were taken from the boot
titled Baltimore Blues (however recorded in Richmond, VA) and was recorded
on April 22, 1985. This is a great soundboard - enjoy!

PS - Thanks to all that emailed me regarding my Budokan proposition. The
winners have been established and will be contacted off the Digest. I
should have the show in MY possession with a week or so, so please have
patience.
