Regards Carey Bird --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: Keith Bode Subject: Re:Sharing the boots/Beat the Boots Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I'm not familiar with this system, so let me ask a question, and share an opinion. What format are the shared recordings in? Are they in MP3 or SHN? MP3 originals are not accepted in the trading world of Grateful Dead traders and serious Allman Brother's Band Traders. MP3 is considered a "Lossy" compression. Personally I have heard many 128 and 256 bit MP3 songs that sounded pretty good. From my perspective of trading in Airplane/Hot Tuna/Starship, Gratful Dead and Allman Brothers Band lists, all lineages must me known, so if there is a MP3 generation it has to be disclosed, and in most cases it is refused. I do compress with a format called Shorten, or SHN, which only compresses to about 60% of the original size, but has no loss in sound quality at all. There are hundred's, probably thousands of servers, with about 100 bands, some with large folowings like the Dead, Phish, Allman Brothers Band, serving thousands and thousands of concerts in SHN format. For Clapton fans there are 2 problems with this. First, all these servers serve music from bands that allow taping. Second, there aren't any servers serving Clapton, probably since he doesn't allow live taping, so it would be difficult to serve Clapton in SHN format, since the premise of the organization that helps people set up servers goes against the flow of the artist having some control. Ok, I'm Babbling now. The bottom line for me, even with a DSL line, is I would prefer to get copies made by using EAC and burned, than by DLing MP3. I don't know what the feeling in this group on that issue is, or what their knowledge of the MP3 VS DAE is, but that what it comes down to, to me. And, I have mailed CD's to europe, and vice versa, so that is not an issue. I am on one Allman Brothers Band list, where there was a spreading of music, under the theme of "Beat the Boot". Instead of people hoarding their bootlegs secretly away, we do what our mommy's taught us to do, share. I have Liberated a Dead Bootleg, "The Rainforest Benefit". I am also in posession of several shows, that were originally bootlegs, that I'd be glad to share. I don't know if it would be possible to coordinate something ongoing like this, but I'd be willing to try. Let's say every 2 weeks we have a small tree, maybe about 20 people, who would be willing to keep spreading the music. We can all share, and help each other. If clapton isn't getting any royalties, why should a bootlegger continue to make money on the "Intellectual Property" that legally belongs to someone else. I would be glad to admin it, the only problem with that is some people would see that as me trying to get as much as possible for me. I say, yes, I do want the music, but I also want others to have it, and a tree makes that possible. Anyone else want to be the Admin on this? If anyone is interested, and willing to help with seeds, let me know. I'd be glad to put one of my own shows up as a seed for the first round, 11/7/94 at the Fillmore. When he was eight years old, Hubert's mother sacrificed an entire week's pay to buy him a guitar. Hubert's first musical experiences were in the Baptist Church where he and the deacon worked out musical arrangements. This is the musical "school" Hubert came from, his roots, along with other blues legends including Otis Spann and Muddy Waters. Hubert's first gig was as a fill-in guitarist for harp player James Cotton. According to Cotton, guitarist Pat Hare couldn't be found and someone pointed to the young Hubert and said, "He can play." Cotton recalls the rest: "As soon as we hit the bandstand I couldn't tell it wasn't Pat Hare back there!" This started a lifelong friendship between Sumlin and Cotton, who (with permission from Hubert's mother) began to work local juke joints and fish frys. Both men went on to become major players in the Chicago blues community, both sharing time with Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. However, it was Hubert's association with Wolf that helped him make his mark in the blues world and music history. Sumlin's first meeting with Wolf is as legendary as the music they created together. At 11 years old, Hubert crawled into a local juke joint trying to sneak in and hear the band. He was kicked out as soon as he was spotted, but wandered around back to a window behind the bandstand. Hubert stacked Coca-Cola cases against the window and as he stood on top to peek in at the band, they fell out from under him and he came crashing through the window in the middle of a song. Hubert remembers: "I looked up and saw Wolf looking down at me; He said 'Let him stay! Let him stay! Bring him a chair.' He wouldn't give me nothing but water, and I sat there and watched Wolf, Pat Hare and Junior Parker. That night he took me home and told my mother to please not punish me because all I only wanted was to hear the music." A few years later Sumlin began working with Wolf in Memphis. Wolf had to promise Hubert's mother that he would watch over him in order to get permission to take the teenager to Chicago. Several years later, the most legendary and longest partnership in the blues world began when Sumlin moved to Chicago in 1954 to join Wolf's band. Wolf and Hubert changed the sound of American music and helped create rock and roll. Hubert Sumlin is an electric guitar pioneer, largely responsible for the sound of many modern guitar players. Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Bob Weir, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana and many other critically acclaimed musicians consider Sumlin a major influence on their playing. Clapton proved his respect by refusing to do the Chess Records London Howlin' Wolf Sessions unless Hubert was present. "The Red Rooster", "Backdoor Man", "Shake For Me", "Killing Floor", "Smokestack Lightnin" and "Sittin' On Top of the World" are songs you may recognize from cover versions by Cream, The Doors, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, or The Rolling Stones. Hubert Sumlin formulated the original music to these classics. In Hubert's music you hear the acoustic stylings of the delta meshed with the loud excitement and bright lights of Chicago and Memphis, combined with the artistry of Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Pat Hare, Son House and Wolf. Sumlin brought these influences to the next level, creating his own exceptional sound. His tone and intensity were instantly identifiable. After Wolf's death in 1976, Sumlin quit music for a while; he couldn't imagine performing without his mentor. When he returned to music in the early eighties, Hubert established his own career as a solo artist. He toured the world with various acts, playing with Albert King, Otis Rush, Pinetop Perkins and countless others. Sumlin became close friends with Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan and still wears the trademark "music note" guitar strap that Stevie gave him. Hubert Sumlin is a historically significant originator of blues composition and one of the last living connections to an era that produced so much monumental music. Managed to order: 461 Ocean, Another Ticket, Backless, August, Money and Cigs, Behind the Sun, Eric Clapton, and ordered for good measure Just One Night. (i already had slowhand, journeyman and i like both those a lot) After having listened to all these albums in pieces over the past 2-3 days, here's my 2 cents. The Good: Money and Cigarettes: Very Laid back... But the sound is more organic, there's more guitar playing. Albeit there are three guys playing, but it's good. The material is blues and some rock straight up. I liked this one a lot 461 Ocean Blvd: Mellow as well, but I like the gospel and reggae tinge on this album. Very well produced. Eric's voice, albeit weak, is tender and at times bluesy. I like the slide playing and even though Sheriff is stale, the ballads are good. Behind the Sun: My only favorite of the Phil Collins produced bunch. I wished Phil and Eric never worked together. In fact, I wish Eric drove the content of his own albums more. but problem is we'd probably have 10 blues albums.. But what's wrong with that.. This album is worth just for Same Old blues, Just like a Prisoner and Forever Man. If you subtracted the 80's gloss, this would be Eric's best solo album. The Bad: Another Ticket/Backless: Just a cursory listen.. But i would lump in also No reason to cry and there's one in every crowd in this category. Eric on cruise control. Country rock with an occasional blues tune. Decent stuff, but I don't know what shape Eric was in. Eric Clapton (self titled): Now here's a missed opportunity. He had one his best backing bands of all time. People who genuinely cared for Eric's career. BUT>..... Whoever produced the album needs to be shot.. Guitar is buried, way down.. Although I don't like the tone too much, the playing shows some fire here and there. Eric's voice is very weak. The Ugly: August: YUCK YUCK and more YUCK. Full on Keyboard tilt. There's nothing I like about this album, from the cover shots, to the Tina Turner duet. It's an ugly effort. Produced like a Thompson Twins album. Of the albums I didnt categorize. Journeyman is a good, slowhand is good.. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: Jeff French Subject: Looking for the following shows to trade... PS anyone know of artwork for this show ? --=_--SlowhandDigest-- From: "Ken Norris" Subject: Pilgrim Tour Versus Reptile Tour Content-type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Today I got out my vintage Dan Rease produced recording of the Boston Pilgrim show. EC is really playing a lot of guitar on I Shot The Sheriff! So I thought I would draw a few comparisons between the tours, and pick winners. Unplugged set Reptile tour wins. More substantial, and no acoustic Layla (at least until the end) Pilgrim mini-set Reptile tour wins. He really knows how to play those songs now. I miss Pilgrim though. Guitar + Blues set Pilgrim tour wins. In my view, Old Love + Crossroads + HYELAW + I Shot The Sheriff beats I Want A Little Girl + Travelin' Light (or Badge) + Hoochie Coochie Man + Slow Blues Du Jour. Yeah, the keyboard solos on Old Love on the Pilgrim tour were awful, but EC was playing a lot more guitar, and there were no rotating solos on HYELAW. Greatest Hits mini-set Reptile tour wins. Layla added and Tearing Us Apart dropped. Encore Reptile tour wins. Over The Rainbow gives the show a feeling of completion. I wonder what he'll be playing in June?
