Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1; format=flowed Hi Slowhanders, This is a review of the Natu Blues Festival, released one week ago. Like in the US, the cradle of brazilian blues is definitely the south of our country. I moved to here few months ago thinking I wouldn't catch great concerts like Rio de Janeiro anymore (hehe). Actually I'll miss Jeff Healey & Robert Cray next sunday, but I can't compain. In the first day of the festival, we had a brazilian opening act, but the great act was Magic Slim and the Teardrops, a hell of a concert, great band, he's in top shape. Next day, a new band formed only by southern brazilian musicians opened and did a great job playing as Carey Bell sidemen. He did a good show, full of classics that he had been playing with Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon in the fifties/sixties. Closing the night, Hubert Sumlin (with a brazilian band too). He seemed a bit tired IMO, don't get me wrong, it was just amazing to watch a legend like him, idol of EC, Hendrix and Stevie Ray, but he didn't showed the same vitality as BB King or Buddy Guy. His guitar was too low, but someone changed his amplifier and suddenly he was plugged to a enourmous Marshall very distorted...and it got better! The London Howling Wolf sessions and Eric Clapton's fine job there were mentioned during this show. The last day, the third brazilian opening act, very nice, and then the biggest (in many senses...) act of the show, a singer I didn't knew, Big Time Sarah. What a voice! She does all kinds of spicy jokes with the audience, VERY entertaining, and did a great job there, good surprise. And closing the festival, one of my favorite players, Coco Montoya, playing amazingly well. Big jam with everybody onstage. We had a ball there, nice blues nights! Funny stuff: 1) Magic Slim invaded the stage in all of the other shows, to jam, and in some times, he brought a lot of fire to the other players onstage. 2) I met my ole'good friend Andre Salles there. The detail is that we didn't planned, since we're both, MANY miles away from our home, in another state, another part of the country, nice coincidence, but we're talking about a guy who once took an 11 hour flight from Rio to NYC just to see a Clapton's concert; and I, myself flew away many hours following Reptile tour around Brazil, so there were two good trippers! BTW, what a cool lady Andre took there! Hehe, he'll gonna kill me for that:-) If you want to check the concerts site follow the link http://www.natublues.com.br/main.htm It's in portuguese, but you can check the pictures at a little grey box with the text "Veja as fotos do show de Curitiba, dia 25/4", below a whiskey bottle animation on the right. Sorry for the almost inexsitent EC content. Eric has generally remained non-political in his music, and I believe that has been one reason (of many) that his work has held up as well as it has over the years. Sure, he has recorded some spiritual/gospel songs and as you say, Jerry Williams' songs are often subtly spiritual, but Eric has not rammed the point home, say as Dylan attempted to do (with very mixed results) in the late 70's. Personally I can't stand rock music with political affiliations (Australia's own Midnight Oil is a prime offender) and I prefer religion to be kept at a polite distance too. I have never understood why there are heavy metal Christian bands, the two concepts seem totally opposed to me, but a cynic would say there is a big market out there for that kind of music. I would certainly be horrified if Eric were to chase that market for business' sake, but I think that is highly unlikely. Running On Faith was a fantastic performance, and a song Eric really made his own, both as a performer and in terms of his own life. Really he couldn't have expressed it better in an entire album anyhow. Just a few thoughts from a different perspective. Cheers, Jon P.S. I hope Eric's management has an ear to the ground on the Digest too... -----Original Message----- From: V. Dimitroff [mailto:vdimitroff@ntlworld.com] Sent: None Subject: You are the Producer Suggestions so far expressed personal aural preferences: sound (e.g. acoustic) or musical style (e.g. pure blues). I would not limit it to any single sound or style (to enjoy Eric's versatility), but rather build it around a THEME - how about "Eric's Spiritual Journey" We have numerous evidences of it throughout his career, from 'Presence of the Lord' through ' Holly Mother' and 'Sinner's Prayer' to 'The Calling' on Santana's 'Supernatural'. There are explicit Christian songs (traditional gospel and blues) and less obvious, nevertheless highly spiritually charged ones. Old mates and influences like Christian musicians Stevie Winwood, Nathan East and Jerry Lynn Williams (author of 'Running on Faith') can be among guests on the album, maybe even Dave Markee (bassist from around 'Just One NIght' time, now a church pastor in Croydon).. I have no doubt that Eric's spiritual journey is still unfolding, retirement or otherwise, and few have his potential to influence other lives. For the cynical amongst us, to whom this 'faith thing' doesn't mean a lot, I would suggest a cynically commercial reason: Christian Music is by far the fastest growing segment in the musical industry, in times of shrinking profits elsewhere. As a producer I see an opportunity: the right time, the right artist, the right theme - the album will outsell anything Eric has done in the past (and probably anything released in the same year). For those who share my faith and understanding of music as one of God's ways to work on us, I would offer the album as alternative worship. More powerful than the self-isolated 'CCM' artists, coming from a man who has known evil too close and is still capable to WALK ON in a really convincing manner. Not a bad idea for an album title, btw ('Walk On') - what do you think? Just a few crazy thoughts... Vlado P.S. Written in the secret hope that Eric's management or representatives of his label are lurking on this list, ear-to-the-ground for the Voice of the Market ;o))) *************************************************************** This message is intended for the addressee named and may contain confidential information. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I recently re-watched the Larry King interview from four years ago (circa. Pilgrim), which really makes it hard for me to believe that EC's recent work is anything other than genuine (ie. unencombered by commercialism, "from his heart"). This is clearly music that he believe in, music that he feels. Yes, Eric respectfully appeases his fans by phoning in old "favorites" (WT, SOYL, Cocaine) when playing live. But, you have a big job ahead of you if you want to convince me that "River of Tears", "I Wan't a Little Girl", and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" are the result of pressure from Reprise Records, or simply audience hand-outs. I do not see it that way. 1971 (LAOALS) is over. 1989 (Journeyman) is over. 1995/1995 (NBTB) is sadly over. The music, the performance will always live on in my heart, but that doesn't mean it is still in EC's when he records new music or wheels by our local sports arenas. What do you think? Jonathan From: "Philip Jeromin" Subject: Amen, Keith! Thanks, Keith, that's what I would have wanted to put in words about this "he should do ... next" stuff but never could. I like "Reptile" and "Pilgrim", tho'. :) And I feel like there's a lot in them that already has "Eric likes to do this and a lot of people don't" quality...
