We love the fact the people enjoy the releases of the mysterious 3BR label, and since people wonder who we are, why they can’t find our stuff, and what our shirt sizes are, here’s an OFFICIAL 3BR FAQ…well, at least as much as we want to tell you.
Q. Who IS 3BR?
Wouldn't you like to know. Let's just put it this way...we're a gang of collectors of fine, "unreleased" or maybe "underappreciated" music. The Professor and Igor are the principals, but we have a goodly number of field hands who are as much a part of it as the two stooges.
Q. Who does what?
It's most often "The Professor", who's the remastering genius, and "Igor" who sources the material from the wild blue yonder, and does the art. Not that we don't trade roles now and then - Igor has had his hand in the audio of a number of things, and the Professor has sourced a few rare gems. But mostly, that's it.
Q. Tell us about 3BR International HQ?
Oooohhh...it's deep in a mountainside, through a secret door, down a sloping tunnel and into the Professor's lair...where you'll find various electronic do-dads...no, seriously, it's really a couple places, the outposts of each of the principals. The Professor's lab is made up of a whiz-bang, souped-up rocketship of a PC that can wreak more havoc sonically than you can imagine, and various analog and digital input sources to suck that audio into the compu-monster. Over at Igor's branch is a similar PC, but Igor also has an analog-to-digital studio that converts a lot of the recordings to bits and bytes so's that the Professor can do his thing. And the graphics thingys that make all those swell CD inserts we know you love so much.
Q. What material comes out of 3BR?
We like lots of stuff, obviously. We release a lot of Eric Clapton music, because we get our hands on a bunch of it, and frankly, we think most of his "official" live things aren't all that exciting. And hell, that stuff comes to 3BR International HQ a lot these days. But if you look at our little catalog, you'll see a lot of Beatles-related stuff (we dig those mop-tops a bunch), some James Taylor, Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello...and if it strikes our fancy, we have a go. Britney Spears doesn't strike our fancy (not musically, anyway) so don't ask.
Q. What's your philosophy?
Our WHAT??? We believe that good music that's circulating among the faithful should be heard by as many people as have the means to do so. We think hiding, hoarding, secreting music by the cognoscenti is the stuff of pinheaded little jerks who should lose their license. So if we get our hands on something to master, we try to make sure anyone that wants to hear it can. And if we hear that "this is for serious traders only", hell, we start giving 'em away on street corners. Don't tell US it can't be heard.
What else?...hmmm...oh, if you haven't noticed, we no likes audience recordings, so you needn't send 'em our way. We're both musicians, or used to think we were, and we think audies - for the most part, there ARE exceptions - bury and screw up the dynamics of the bands that are performing the shows.
Like, Clapton pulls together a nice hot band and rehearses the daylights out of them, but the beauty of Steve Gadd's brushes and the dramatic sweeps of Greg Phillingane's Hammond organ are buried in one big pile of sound. No thanks...
Q. I can't find your stuff in any bootleg store or website - WHY?
Easy answer there. Since we've begun, we haven't sold a single copy, not one. We're NOT bootleggers. We're collectors and traders. OK, maybe on a more demonstrative and proactive level (how many guys that you trade with actually spend 60 hours remastering a 55 minute tape, and then create full color art for it?) but traders nonetheless. So anyhow, if anyone has paid a nickel for a 3BR disc, you got ripped-off because we've never charged a thing. (yes, we notice the scurvy bastards that sell knock-off 3BR's on eBay and the internet). Bootlegs should be traded, NEVER sold.
We think bootleggers are assholes, to be honest with you. 98% of them don't give a damn about their tapes, spend little time and no money to make them presentable, don't care much about documentation of the shows they release, contribute nothing to the artist or the songwriters, and charge you upwards of $20 a disc.
So...no, if you only buy bootlegs, you'll likely never find our stuff. If you're a good trading citizen, you'll find us!
Q. Are you guys Geetarz?
Nope...not even close....
Q. How can I contact 3BR?
Try this email address... you might get lucky!
